Meanings of Sri Lankan’s Wedding Traditions

 
Most of these traditions came with the Britain when they captured our country. Nowadays most people follow these traditions but they don’t have a clear idea about them. So lets see the meaning of these traditions.



Ring Finger


The reason to put a ring to left ring finger is that there is a believe it will protect the bride from evil spirits.





White Wedding Dress

This tradition starts by the Queen Victoria in 1840. Before that the bride dressed in the best dress she had.









Bridesmaids
Having bridesmaids to the wedding starts in Roman Empire time. Ancient romans believed that in the wedding day the evil spirits curse the bride. So they dresses few more girls same as the bride so evil spirits can’t recognize the real bride.






Bridle Veils

This is also come in Roman Empire time. They used to cover bride’s face with a veil so that evil spirits can’t recognize the bride.









Tie Pinky Fingers

This is originally come from south Asia. By tying fingers, represent the new bond they get in to that special day.









Honeymoon

In ancient Norway, after the marriage the couple hide themselves from the other people for a month or till a full moon. So one of the family members brings them honey and bread for the entire month. After decades it became (Honey + Moon = Honeymoon)
